PRESS
RELEASE

CITY OF
ARROYO GRANDE
MANDATORY WATER CONSERVATION
MEASURES
Due to current dry conditions, at
the
August 12, 2008 meeting, the Arroyo Grande City
Council
enacted mandatory water conservation
measures that were previously set forth in the Municipal Code in 2003. The
measures are categorized by water supply condition. The City has utilized 99%
of its total supply during the past 12 month period, which places the City in a
“Severely Restricted Water Supply Condition.”
Under this condition, the following
measures will take effect immediately
• Use of water which results in
excessive gutter runoff is prohibited.
• No water shall be used for cleaning
driveways, patios, parking lots, sidewalks, streets or other
such use except where necessary to
protect the public health and safety.
• Outdoor water use for washing
vehicles shall be attended and have hand-controlled watering
devices, typically including
spring-loaded shutoff nozzles.
• Outdoor irrigation is prohibited
between the hours of
ten a.m. and
four p.m.
• Irrigation of private and public
landscaping, turf areas and gardens is permitted at even-numbered addresses
only on Mondays and Thursdays and at odd-numbered addresses only on Tuesdays and
Fridays. No irrigation of private and public landscaping, turf areas and
gardens is permitted on Wednesdays. Irrigation is permitted at all addresses on
Saturdays and Sundays; however, in all cases customers are directed to use no
more water than necessary to maintain landscaping.
• Emptying and refilling swimming
pools and commercial spas are prohibited except to prevent
structural damage and/or to provide
for the public health and safety.
• Use of potable water for soil compaction
or dust control purposes in construction activities is
prohibited. Incentives and
assistance provided by the City through its Water Conservation Program will
also be expanded and a number of efforts are under way to increase water
supply. The free plumbing retrofit program, which provides low-flow shower
heads and toilets for homes built prior to 1992, was renewed another year. In
addition, new incentives for landscaping retrofits will be developed and
offered within the next few months.
In addition to addressing the
current shortage, successful conservation is key to managing water
rates by reducing the need for
expensive water upgrade capital projects. Therefore, everyone benefits by participating.
If you have questions regarding
water conservation regulations or would like to participate in the
retrofit program, please contact the
Public Works Department at 473-5440. Please also feel free to contact City Hall
at 473-5400 with other questions or concerns or visit the City’s website at
